WHAT’S HIDING BEHIND THE CLOSET?
Often, under the influence of fear, we exaggerate and make up stories about the situation we are in. In such moments, the feeling of the unknown blocks our thoughts, restrains us, and prevents us from fully experiencing the situation.
When faced with the unknown, a child’s mind creates fantastic images. Scary shadows and silhouettes turn into frightening, yet understandable, human-like figures. This becomes a defense mechanism to cope with the fear of the unknown. Children’s fears often grow into adult fears, such as the fear of darkness turning into anxiety about new situations or fear of trying new things.
In adulthood, fear loses its strength but becomes a common experience. A new way of dealing with fear is direct contact with reality.
To bring these fearful images to life, I use the technique of linocut. This method allows me to create many repeating prints of the same image. The duplication of images symbolizes the loss of fear and its influence over us.
